Could AI Reject Your Medicare Claims? What You Need To Know About The New System
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has initiated a trial program in six states—Texas, New Jersey, Oklahoma, Ohio, Washington, and Arizona—leveraging AI to inform claims decision-making. Dubbed the Wasteful and Inappropriate Service Reduction (WISeR) Model, the program aims to streamline prior-authorization processes for non-emergency services, such as planned surgeries or MRI scans, while excluding emergency inpatient and emergency services from AI review.
CMS asserts the technology will reduce waste and accelerate approvals, but concerns linger among experts and lawmakers. The fear: AI may deny claims for services that should rightfully be covered by Medicare. The trial, running through 2031, marks a significant shift in how Medicare claims are processed, with implications for both providers and patients.
